In 1883’s first two episodes, which Paramount+ released on their streaming site last week. we were introduced to the various characters of 1883 including the Dutton family: James (Tim McGraw), Margaret (Faith Hill), Elsa (Isabel May) and a young John Dutton Sr. (Audie Rick) and cowboys Shea (Sam Elliott) and Thomas (LaMonica Garrett). By the second episode, we got superstar wattage with the introduction of Billy Bob Thornton as lawman Marshal Jim Courtright and a cameo appearance by Tom Hanks as a general in the Civil War. Shea, Thomas, and the Dutton family, along with a group of green immigrants left Fort Worth, Texas and head west to Oregon in hopes of settling in the area. In this week’s episode, “River,” James butts heads with Shea and Thomas about an important decision that will affect everyone in the caravan. Tensions rise in the camp when an accusation is made and Elsa begins a flirtation with one of the cowboys.
