“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday," her family said in a statement shared with NBC.  The London-born actress starred in a variety of versatile films, including as the mystery writer and true crime fanatic Jessica Fletcher on CBS’ Murder, She Wrote and as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.  She got her start as a professional actress at 17 when she was cast in the 1944 film Gaslight. According to IMDB, between 1945 and 1952, Lansbury appeared in 11 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) films and many other studio features; such as United Artists’ The Private Affairs of Bel Ami (1947) and Paramount Pictures’ Samson and Delilah (1949) before making her television debut in the mid-1950s. The actress also became widely recognized for her part as the manipulative mother in the 1962 film All Fall Down and for a similar role she portrayed in the Cold War thriller, The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Lansbury didn’t make her Broadway debut until the early ’60s with “Anyone Can Whistle” but continued to earn high praise for her work on-stage in shows “Mame” (1966), “Gypsy” (1974), and as the meat pie-making Mrs. Lovett in “Sweeney Todd” (1979) as per PBS. Her dedication and talent eventually earned prestigious recognition–including five Tony Awards, an induction into the TV Hall of Fame in 1996, 12 Emmy awards and 10 Golden Globe awards, and multiple Oscar nominations throughout her long-spanning career.  Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw, Lansbury is survived by her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury; her three children, Anthony, Deirdre, and David; three grandchildren, Peter, Katherine, and Ian; plus five great-grandchildren.  A private family ceremony will be held at a date to be determined, as per the official statement.  This story is developing.
