Since then, wedding bands made of Welsh gold have featured in pretty much every royal wedding, including those of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Prince William and Duchess Kate, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. While Meghan’s wedding band is of Welsh gold, Harry actually chose to broke with tradition and chose a more modern platinum band for himself which he wears every day. However, you might have noticed that his brother William never wears, and indeed has never worn, a wedding ring. Why is this? The answer, it turns out, is pretty simple: he doesn’t like wearing jewelry. While he slid a gold band onto Kate Middleton’s finger during their 2011 wedding ceremony, William chose to go ringless. The night before the wedding, a palace aide had confirmed William’s decision, stating it as a matter of “personal preference.” William doesn’t even wear a signet ring, like many male aristocrats including his father, who wears a ring stamped with the Princes of Wales insignia. In fact, Prince Charles wears both his signet ring and his wedding ring on his pinkie finger, rather than the ring finger. While William’s brother and father both choose to wear wedding bands, his grandfather Prince Philip did not wear a ring for the duration of his 73-year marriage to the queen.
