In a recent interview, Reese Witherspoon alluded that a reboot of the beloved 2002 film could happen one day. Now, before you go and get your hopes up, the actress shared her support for the idea of a reboot–she didn’t actually confirm if there have been talks of bringing the movie back for a second installment. Just a few days shy of the film’s 20th anniversary, Witherspoon, now 46, sat down with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb and Jenna Hager on Oct. 4 to discuss her new book, Busy Betty, and the actress’ dedication to creating female-centric TV and film. “Is there ever going to be a reboot?” asked Kotb. “I hope so,” replied Witherspoon, who followed up, “I think that would be a great idea.” The show’s hosts later asked Witherspoon to clarify whether she would be interested in starring in the yet-to-be-announced reboot. “Maybe, I don’t know. That sounds fun,” she said, adding, “Do you guys want me to do that?” Kotb and Hager spoke for everyone when they enthusiastically responded, “Yes, yes, we do!” After the audience roared and the hosts pleaded with the star once more to make it happen, Witherspoon offered a bit of hope. “Okay, I’ll make some calls,” she teased. In the original film, Witherspoon portrayed the role of Melanie Smooter, a fashion designer returning to her home state of Alabama–and the life she abruptly left behind, including her old pal played by Melanie Lynskey–to get her ex Jake (Josh Lucas) to finally sign their divorce papers so she can marry her New York fiancé Andrew (Patrick Dempsey). Last month, Witherspoon commemorated the movie’s 20th anniversary on social media, writing, “20 years ago Sweet Home Alabama came out and completely changed my life. So many great scenes with these amazing actors and my favorite line… ‘So I can kiss you anytime I want.’ Do you remember seeing it for the first time?” More Pop Culture:
