The Hargreeves siblings really need to lean on each other in Season 3, when they arrive back in 2019 after saving the world in 1963, only to discover that they’ve never been born. World-ending chaos ensues. In true Umbrella Academy form, they are able to stop that chaos—so what comes next? Will there even be a next chapter for Steve Blackman’s series based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic series? Here’s everything we know about a potential The Umbrella Academy Season 4.

Has The Umbrella Academy been renewed for Season 4?

Not officially. There’s still yet to be an announcement from either the creative team behind The Umbrella Academy or Netflix about an official season four pickup, however, there have been rumors swirling around that this is already a done deal. Most of those rumors stem from the fact that one, The Umbrella Academy is a huge hit for the streamer, and two, showrunner Steve Blackman signed a huge, multi-year deal with Netflix in 2020 to keep producing content. Hopefully we’ll get official news either way soon!

What will The Umbrella Academy Season 4 be about?

That’s unclear! When and if the series is renewed, we’ll have more information. Season 3 pulled some of its materials from series 3 of the comic, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion (which actually ends with the introduction of the Sparrows instead of beginning with it), and there is a yet-to-be-released fourth series of the comic that could provide additional storylines if there’s a Season 4 of the Netflix series—but it looks more and more like the series would be moving past the source material and coming up with its own storylines. With the way that Season 3 ended, surely much of Season 4 would have to be about figuring out what exactly happened when Reginald Hargreeves reset the universe (you know, that old hat), and what happens now that the members of the Umbrella Academy lost their powers. There are some big mysteries to solve, for sure.

What happened at the end of The Umbrella Academy Season 3?

When the Umbrella Academy saved the world from an apocalypse for the second time back in 1963 and fended off the Handler (Kate Walsh) and the Commission, they returned to their time in 2019 only to find things were very different from how they left them: Their father Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) was still alive and he had never adopted them back in 1989, instead adopted seven other superpowered kids and turning them into the Sparrow Academy. The Umbrella Academy not existing in this timeline — and, as they find out, never even being born — causes a rip in the space-time continuum that could lead to the destruction of the entire universe (not just one timeline, all timelines, forever) unless the Hargreeves family gets its act together soon enough to stop it from happening. Reginald has a plan to do so, although it mostly benefits him and will end up killing the rest of them, but still he goes forward with it — telling everyone that they need to fight some monsters protecting a sort-of reset button in another realm. Not everyone is on board, and so Reginald murders his son Luther (Tom Hopper) and tells everyone else it was the monster that did it in order to motivate them to move forward. It works. They travel through a portal into a different realm, fight off the monsters (or “Guardians”) and then Reggie starts using their powers to fuel a machine that will reset the universe. It almost kills them until Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), the Number Three Hargreeves, kills Reginald. Still, she is eager to reset the universe in order to get back to her daughter Claire, and so pushes the last button anyway. When the team returns from that other realm, Allison is reunited with her daughter (at what cost?!), the Hargreeves children are all alive, including Luther, but surprise, surprise, they realize they no longer have their powers. That said, we can’t imagine what that paragraph sounded like if you’ve never watched the show, but just know it was a wildly intense time and this family’s future has never been more uncertain.

When will The Umbrella Academy Season 4 premiere?

Hopefully, once we get an official Season 4 pickup, we’ll get word of just how long it’ll take for new Hargreeves’ adventures to grace our screens.

Who will be in The Umbrella Academy Season 4 cast?

Everyone more or less survived Season 3, so you’d expect all the main players to return including:

Elliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves, who had a lovely coming out story in Season 3

Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves, who ends the season discovering that in this universe reset he was never turned into part ape and is also missing his wife, Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez)

David Castañeda as Diego Hargreeves, who spent the season repairing his relationship with a pregnant Lila (Ritu Arya)

Aidan Gallagher as Five

Robert Sheehan as Klaus

Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison

Justin H. Min as Ben

And just because Reginald Hargreeves had half of his head sliced off, don’t think he didn’t survive the universe reset—he seems to be back and more powerful than ever in this new timeline, so expect Feore to return as well.
