Previously, in episode 13 (titled “The Day of the Wedding”) we watched as Kevin’s former fiancée (and current co-parent to his twins) Madison (Caitlin Thompson) and sister-in-law Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) investigate a series of clues they found in Kevin’s room that morning, hoping to uncover the identity of the woman they assume he slept with the night before. Those clues included a bra and a floral wrap flung over a chair, and a love poem written on a napkin. They narrowed the candidates down to three women: his ex-wife, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), his plus-one Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison), or the wedding singer (Katie Lowes). The wrap, we already know, belonged to Cassidy, who previously rebuffed Kevin’s romantic advances, insisting that the two of them were better off as friends. However, it’s been several years since then, and if there’s one thing this show has taught us, it’s that plenty can change with time. And “The Day of the Wedding” ended without explaining the bra or the poem, leaving plenty of mysteries still to explore in episode 14, which premiered on April 26. Here is everything we learned from This Is Us Season episode 14, “The Night Before the Wedding,” including who Kevin ends up with.
Does Kevin end up with Sophie on This Is Us?
At the rehearsal dinner the night before Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Philip (Chris Geere) wed, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) wastes no time calling out the fact that Kevin has been staring at the door all night, waiting for Sophie to arrive. Although Kevin assures him that he’s not harboring any feelings for Sophie, telling his brother that he’s only seen his ex-wife twice in the past few years, his claim is belied by the look on his face when Sophie herself walks in. Once he catches up with her, Kevin offers to drive her to town for some emergency shopping, since the airline lost her luggage. But by the time they get into town, all the clothing stores are closed, leading Sophie to approach a local dry cleaner to ask if she can check his unclaimed clothes rack, where she finds a green dress that just so happens to fit perfectly. Next, they hit the grocery store for s’mores ingredients for Kevin’s kids, where he brings her up to speed on his nonprofit construction company for veterans, which he says is going great. And she tells him that she’s a traveling nurse now, meaning that she is once again in a long-distance marriage… or so Kevin assumes, until she admits that she’s divorced. She tells him that she and her husband grew apart, and he admits to her that his dating life has been a series of nonstarters, as the show flashes back to remind us that the two have been a pair on and off their whole lives, since Sophie first joined Kevin’s kindergarten class (on Valentine’s Day, no less). That night, after trading loaded looks all day, Kevin wordlessly joins Sophie on the elevator, and the two head to his room, where Sophie makes the first move. However, just as things are getting hot and heavy—with Sophie’s bra landing on the chair where Beth and Madison will later discover it—Kevin comments her shampoo smells just the same as he remembers it, which snaps Sophie out of her amorous mood. Upset, she tells Kevin that although he’s always had a hold over her, she can’t go backwards. She can’t be the girl in his memory, because that’s not who she is anymore. Despite Kevin’s protests, she storms out of the room.
What happens between Kevin and the wedding singer on This Is Us?
Before Kevin can greet Sophie at Kate’s rehearsal dinner, he is accosted by Philip’s cousin Oliver, eager to divvy up the single women as the only two “eligible bachelors” at the rehearsal dinner. But after Kevin assures him that he’s only there to support Kate and Philip, Oliver departs to drunkenly pursue a love connection with whoever catches his eye. Shortly thereafter, the wedding singer, who introduces herself as Arielle, finds herself in Oliver’s crosshairs, leading her to strike up an enthusiastic conversation with Kevin about The Manny. But once the coast is clear, she admits she’s never watched his show—“I’m more of a podcast person”—and they part ways so he can greet Sophie. That night, after Sophie leaves his room, Kevin heads down to the hotel bar, where he finds Arielle jotting lyrics on napkins. After telling him that she writes songs out of what she observes while people-watching, he asks her to share her best observation of the night, and she reads him some lyrics she composed while watching him. The song captures the longing way he looks at Sophie… and also seems to establish that Arielle would be more than happy to provide Kevin an alternative choice if things don’t work out with Sophie. Obviously embarrassed, Kevin decides to call it a night, but Arielle lets him keep the napkin with his song on it.
Do Kevin and Cassidy end up together on This Is Us?
After leaving Arielle at the bar, Cassidy meets Kevin outside his room. She needs help getting out of her dress, after fighting with a stuck zipper for half an hour. Kevin frees the fabric from the stubborn zipper, and while Cassidy changes in the bathroom—tossing her floral wrap on the same chair where Sophie’s bra landed—she tells him that she feels like she needs to find someone so she won’t have to keep bothering Kevin every time she needs something. However, she then determines that finding someone comes with too much baggage, and that she’s content bugging Kevin after all. Taking that as an opening (and still freshly smarting from Sophie’s rejection), Kevin suggests that maybe they should be more than just friends, but Cassidy reminds him that she’s not his person, and he’s not hers. But he is her best friend (and her boss), and she’s happy with that.
Who does Kevin end up with on This Is Us?
Throughout Kate’s wedding weekend, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) keeps thinking she’s speaking to 20-year-old Sophie, who is still married to Kevin. So when Rebecca notices that Sophie seems a little bit preoccupied at the reception, she tells the woman she thinks is her daughter-in-law that the timing between her and Kevin just isn’t right. Trying to reassure Sophie, Rebecca tells her that Kevin isn’t ready for her yet, but that he will be someday. Although Rebecca doesn’t know whether Sophie will be willing to wait for him, she assures her that when the timing is right, he’s going to be “so great.” Of course, the real Sophie that Rebecca is speaking to is a twice-divorced 45-year-old who’s done plenty of waiting. She considers the wisdom of her former mother-in-law, seeming to chew on the words, searching for truth. After a pep talk from Randall, Kevin heads to Sophie, prepared to give her a speech about how determined he is not to screw things up between them this time, but she beats him to the punch. Proving that you don’t have to be a Pearson to deliver a good speech, she talks about how they’ve both grown up into the best versions of themselves since their failed marriage as teenagers. She hopes that they might be able to build something together based on who they are now rather than who they used to be. With that, Kevin pulls the Valentine he gave her in kindergarten from his wallet, telling her, “I’ve always carried you with me.” Speechless, Sophie kisses him as his family bursts into applause (and Beth and Madison high-five) around them.
What happens next week on This Is Us?
It’s taken the majority of six seasons, but finally, four episodes from the end of the series, we are getting an episode focused entirely on Miguel (Jon Huertas). Titled “Miguel,” the official synopsis for Episode 15, which will air May 3, reads simply, “Miguel over the years.” That obviously doesn’t tell us much, but we have to assume that the episode will cover the eight years that he and Rebecca were apart following their fateful Thanksgiving dinner, which has been repeatedly revisited throughout Season 6. And hopefully, it will continue on after they reconnect, showing how they went from old friends to more-than-friends to husband and wife. After all, without a lot of time left in the series, it seems like it’s now or never for Miguel and Rebecca’s love story, and we can’t imagine This Is Us would choose never. We also wouldn’t rule out distant flashbacks to Miguel’s childhood, first marriage, and long friendship with Jack, showing how he became the man we’ve all grown to know and love today. And of course, we’re definitely hoping for an answer about where Miguel is in the future, since we still haven’t seen him join the rest of the Pearson family around Rebecca’s deathbed. Although he assured Randall last week that there was nothing major wrong with him, we’ll feel a lot better if we get a glimpse of him alive and well in the future. Next, what can we expect from the This Is Us series finale? All the clues and spoilers we could find about how the series will end.
